Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area Receives Grant to provide an all expenses paid field trip to Yuma’s two state historic parks and Yuma East Wetlands.
Yuma, AZ November 13, 2023 – Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area has received an Open OutDoors for Kids grant from the National Park Foundation to provide all-expenses paid field trips to Yuma County’s 3rd and 4th grade students.

Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area Receives Grant to provide an all expenses paid field trip to Yuma’s two state historic parks and Yuma East Wetlands.
Yuma, AZ November 13, 2023 – Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area has received an Open OutDoors for Kids grant from the National Park Foundation to provide all-expenses paid field trips to Yuma County’s 3rd and 4th grade students.
Three-thousand students can participate in the Yuma Live History Adventure field trips from October through April to learn about and experience nature and history at the Yuma East Wetlands and Yuma’s two state historic parks.
Field Trip experiences include:
- In-classroom learning through an educational and fun video series;
- Hands-on interactive STEM-based learning activities including building a syphon and a dam, monitoring the weather, and communicating with morse code at the Colorado River State Historic Park;
- Team-building activities to explore and find historical facts needed to “escape” from the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and;
- Creating future stewards of our natural environment through the exploration of native plant species and wildlife it supports along the banks of the Colorado River at the Yuma East Wetlands Wildlife Conservation Area.

The National Park Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids program builds on a child’s innate wonder and curiosity of the natural world, immersing students in national parks and national heritage areas through field trips, classroom engagements, and educational activities. The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area has been offering these field trips free of charge for the past three years to connect students to nature, local history, and to instill a love for the sciences through fun, interactive, ad engaging educational experiences. Without this grant funding from the National Park Foundation, these field trips would not be possible.
The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area conserves, interprets and enhances the natural, cultural, and historic resources of the area through education, advocacy, and collaboration with a multitude of public and private partners. The YCNHA manages the two Yuma state historic parks and the Yuma East Wetlands and has worked diligently over the past twenty years with the City of Yuma to advance economic development in downtown Yuma and to establish Yuma’s riverfront parks and 3 ½ mile riverfront trail system for the whole community to enjoy.
